Our key priorities for 2006-07 are -
Growth in union membership, power and
solidarity
In order to ensure that workers rights are protected
we need strong union workplaces with well trained delegates and
union representatives. We will be working together to continue
to build union membership in our state as a major priority for the
next twelve months.
Making work fairer and safer
The "Your Rights at Work" Campaign is fundamental to
ensuring we build fairer and safer work in the future.
At the same time we will be working to improve and
strengthen state laws and policies where we can to protect SA
workers from the attack of the federal government.
SA Unions will continue to play a leadership role in
the issues facing young workers and women workers as these groups
will be most vulnerable to these groups will be most vulnerable to
the new federal laws.
Australia’s recent record in injury and death at work
is not one to be proud of and we will work with the state government
to significantly improve worker safety.
Working towards an economically strong,
environmentally sound and socially just SA
SA Unions will continue to connect with and influence
the SA strategic planning process.
SA UNIONS Work - Secretary's Report 2006
SA Unions has been actively involved in the ‘Your
Rights at Work” Campaign which aims to defeat the new federal
industrial relations laws which represent the biggest threat to
workers rights in 100 years.
This action included rallies outside every office of
federal Liberal members of Parliament last July, delegates and
members meetings across unions and the state, raising community
awareness and holding the biggest workers meeting in many years in
Elder Park to watch a national sky channel broadcast about workers’
rights.
The next twelve months will continue to be a
challenge as we keep the campaign momentum up as well as ensuring we
do all we can to defend workers in our state against the impact of
the new laws.
Already we have examples of sackings and unfair
individual contracts. Strong union organisation is fundamental to
protect workers from these laws. That means we also need to keep
our unions strong and increase our numbers, density and power.
The good work of the last 12 months in building
community networks and raising community awareness means that we can
now effectively target our action to marginal electorates and ensure
that rights at work becomes the key issue at the next federal
election.
To do this we must remain strong, focussed, united
and organised.
