Ad Blitz Launched in Nation's Key Marginals
===============================================================
Australia's most marginal federal Liberal seat has led
off a national advertising campaign against the federal
government's unfair work laws. The message is that
it's important to realise that no worker is immune
from these work laws. Every single employee in
Australia has the potential to have their rights
stripped away by these work laws.

Workers Welcome Local Dispute Resolution Powers
===============================================================
Unions
has welcomed state government legislation giving dispute resolution
powers to the SA Industrial Relations Commission. This is an
important breakthrough and SA Unions applauds the state government
for its initiative.

Black Tuesday - IR Laws Grim Anniversary
===============================================================
The impact
on working families in South Australia's three key marginal
electorates is the focus of community protests marking the first
anniversary of the federal government's unfair work laws.
The
government's own data shows that every person put onto an Australian
Workplace Agreement (individual contracts) loses at least one award
right.

CURRENT & PAST INDUSTRIAL CAMPAIGNS
State Wage Case -
National Parity Sought
SA Unions is seeking a wage increase
which will keep South Australia's minimum wage earners in line with
the rest of Australia. The application will mirror
that lodged by the ACTU on Friday, plus an additional "catch up"
amount to make up for a shortfall from the last wage case.
The ACTU is seeking a $28 a week
increase for workers covered by federal awards. SA Unions will
apply for $28 a week too, for workers under state awards. SA
Unions is also seeking a "catch up"
component, because the last state wage case delivered an outcome
lower than elsewhere. SA workers need an additional $10.50 a
week to keep pace with standards nationally.

Child Labour Award
SA Unions is seeking sensible provisions to
stop very young children working unreasonable hours or in
unreasonable roles, to guarantee they receive proper pay, to protect
them from injury, and to ensure they're not the victims of sexual
predators. We want all children to receive the same standard
of protection regardless of the industry they are in.
The Award is the first step in
providing consistent and strong protections for children in South
Australia via a single consistent standard.

Equal Opportunity Legislation
SA Unions Submission, 30
March 2005
The SA Unions is the peak union organisation for
South Australia representing 34 unions with over 200,000 union
members. The following submission has been developed in consultation
with our affiliate unions.
The Equal Opportunity Act is extremely important
for workers and union members. Although we are more likely to be
involved with the Industrial Relations, Workers Compensation and OHS
Acts, unions also use the EO Act to address areas of discrimination
at work. We are concerned that the people of South Australia are
treated fairly and genuinely receive equal opportunities to
participation in a range of areas regardless of their sex, age,
race, religion, sexuality, beliefs, political activity, union
membership and activity. A number of affiliated unions have
also responded to the review. This submission is in addition to
those and supportive of them.

As part of its Youth Campaign,
SA Unions has a Youth Project Officer, Jodie Schluter, whose job
is to coordinate a network of young people who work in unions,
are union delegates and members, or want to be connected with
the union movement. Any further queries contact the Jodie at SA
Unions
jschluter@saunions.org.au
Young people are active
participants in the workforce in South Australia but are highly
represented in part time work, traineeships and apprenticeships,
low paid work and casual work. Alongside this young people are
also extremely highly represented in those who are unemployed.

information on this exciting project and how you can be involved

Women in Trade Unions Network
The aims of the Network are to
provide union women with opportunity to meet, articulate, share
union and other experiences and exchange ideas in a supportive
environment and to actively encourage unions to make positive
commitment to encourage the participation of women in
unions -
WITUN
The strength of the union
movement is based on its collective, democratic organisation and
its unity of purpose. While women's share of union
membership is rising, their participation in union affairs is
lagging. This reflects women's major share of child
rearing and domestic work and the lack of awareness in many
unions of the problems facing women members and ways of
involving women.
SA Unions Women's Standing
Committee's role is to address these issues that women face in
the workforce. Unions are committed through the Standing
Committee in increasing women's involvement in the workforce.
-
Anna Stewart Memorial Project
The ASMP is an annual project
and aims to increase the participation of women in all
workplaces. Women are increasingly employed as casuals or
part-time workers and these groups are traditionally not well
represented and as part of SA Unions' refocussing agenda we hope
to attract new, vibrant and pro-active members as participants.
