SA
UNIONS
WELCOMES
INFRASTRUCTURE
INVESTMENT
7 June
2007
SA
Unions
has
welcomed
the 2007
state
budget
for
providing
a strong
strategic
base for
future
growth
and
jobs.
SA
Unions
Secretary,
Janet
Giles
says
she's
pleased
that the
government
has at
last
heeded
SA
Unions'
call for
a
prudent
program
of
borrowing
to fund
major
infrastructure
investment.
"Investment
in
infrastructure
create
jobs,
and
delivers
valuable
assets
for the
future.
The
construction
of a new
city
hospital
means
jobs and
economic
growth
now, and
quality
services
into the
future.
It's a
sensible
investment
that
delivers
real
community
benefit",
Ms Giles
says.
"We note
that the
government
is now
delivering
more
than
$300
million
in
payroll
tax
relief
to
business.
At the
same
time,
working
families
face
increased
costs in
sensitive
areas
such as
public
transport,
vehicle
registrations,
and
water
rates.
"We're
concerned
that
families
are
already
having
trouble
making
ends
meet as
a result
of the
federal
government's
unfair
work
laws.
"This
represents
a tax
break
for
bosses -
and as
such, we
think
they
have a
responsibility
to share
that
windfall
with
their
workers."
"We call
on the
business
community
to be
generous
with its
windfall.
Instead
of
simply
adding
to
profit,
we want
business
to
ensure
it is
used
wisely
to boost
employment
and
offer
fair
wages
and
decent
working
conditions.
This
would
help
working
families
grappling
with
rising
costs",
Ms Giles
says.
