TRIBUTE TO UNION ASBESTOS HERO - JACK WATKINS

    18 October 2007

SA Unions mourns the death, but celebrates the extraordinary achievements of one of Australia's finest union activists, Jack Watkins.

Jack passed away unexpectedly at home Tuesday evening.

SA Unions Secretary, Janet Giles says Jack was a champion of social justice, fighting tirelessly for the rights of asbestos victims and their families over more than 30 years.

"Jack Watkins was a determined, ruthless campaigner in the war against asbestos.  He put his own body on the line to change laws and achieve justice for victims."

"He deserves recognition as a national here for his many achievements."

Jack Watkins drew national attention to the dangers of asbestos in the building industry in the 1970's.  He drove an Australia-wide campaign for national standards for asbestos handling.  At state level, he was instrumental in securing laws for safe asbestos removal.

Jack ensured asbestos victims had a voice.  He was a founding member of the SA Asbestos Advisory Committee.  He was a founding member of the Asbestos Victims Association.  He was a founding member and inaugural president of the Asbestos Diseases Society of South Australia.  And he was a strong supporter in the establishment of the SA Asbestos Coalition, uniting victims, unions, asbestos workers, lawyers, medicos, researchers and government in the fight against this insidious product.

Jack was a sterling example of how union activism can change people's lives for the better.  His efforts benefited literally thousands of Australians.  He earned wide respect for his passionate commitment, not just from victims, but even in industry ranks.

Jack Watkins was truly a great South Australian, whose personal courage and commitment changed the nation.  Our deepest sympathy goes to his family and friends.  Vale Jack.
