RATES
RISE,
WAGES
WALLOW -
THE
AWFUL
TRUTH
FOR
WORKING
FAMILIES
8
August 2007
Today's
interest
rate
rise is
a
financial
body
blow for
South
Australian
working
families,
according
to SA
Unions
Secretary,
Janet
Giles.
"Workers
are
struggling.
The
federal
government's
dreadful
WorkChoices
IR laws
have
held
back
wages.
Workers
are
losing
entitlements
and
taking
home
less,
yet
their
mortgages
are
escalating
and the
cost of
living
is on
the
rise.
"The
Howard
Government
must
wear the
blame
for bad
laws
that are
making
it
harder
for
families
to make
ends
meet."
"Despite
our
nation's
riches,
a new
class of
working
poor is
being
created.
Those
with
power
and
influence
are
lining
their
pockets,
while
workers
suffer.
The gap
between
rich and
poor is
becoming
a chasm,
and the
only
solution
is to
get rid
of the
Howard
government,
and its
unfair,
unpopular,
un-Australian
work
laws."
"The
increase
of $40 a
month,
or about
$10 a
week for
a
$250,000
mortgage
means
that the
measly
$10.26 a
week
minimum
wage
rise is
gone
before
workers
even see
it - as
the new
pay rate
doesn't
apply
until
October."
"John
Howard
is Robin
Hood in
reverse
-
stealing
from the
poor and
giving
to the
rich",
Ms Giles
says.
