VALUE
ADDING
MUST
HAPPEN
IN SA
13
July 2007
SA
Unions
is
strongly
backing
the Rann
Government's
stand
that
processing
of
minerals
from
BHP-Billiton's
Olympic
Dam
operations
be
majority
performed
in
Australia
SA
Unions
Secretary,
Janet
Giles
says it
is
important
for the
state's
economic
and
social
future.
"We'll
go even
further
than Mr
Rann and
say not
just
that the
processing
should
be done
in
Australia,
but that
the
priority
should
be to
achieving
that in
South
Australia."
"We need
a mining
company
that is
committed
to this
state
and
committed
to
creating
jobs."
"Just as
important
as the
minerals
that are
extracted
is the
creation
of
sustainable
communities.
That's
the
commitment
we need
from
BHP-Billiton",
MS Giles
says.
"BHP-Billiton
has
received
extraordinary
concessions
in the
operation
of this
mine, as
well as
an
enormous
amount
of
taxpayer
support.
It is
entirely
appropriate
that the
State
government
legislates
to
ensure
this
state
gets a
healthy
return
on its
significant
investment."
"SA
Unions
on
behalf
of the
key
mining
unions
will
seek
consultations
with
BHP-Billiton
to
secure a
commitment
to jobs,
community
building
and
economic
growth
for this
state",
MS Giles
says.
